In our measurements, a business can be named by AI engines without showing on Google: 5 of the 11 businesses the engines named had no Google presence (across 1 of 3 trades; Google snapshot of Sep 28, 2026; AI answers from 1 weekly run, Sep 21, 2026 to Sep 27, 2026; 92 businesses that Google shows or an engine named are not counted yet because their tracking start date is after the first of these runs began).

What the engines draw on besides Google rank
- Your own website, as each engine's crawler reads it: pages it can fetch, the business details in your structured data, and plain-text answers to the questions people ask.
- The directories and review sites the engines cite, and whether your name, address, and phone match everywhere they appear.
- Each engine's own search: some run their own index or a search partner's, so the pages an engine finds are not simply Google's top results.
- Citations: articles, local news, and datasets that name your business as a source.
